James L. Hyer is currently an attorney admitted to practice law in the Courts of the State of New York, Southern District of New York and Eastern District of New York, and is also a trained mediator. Mr. Hyer has successfully assisted clients in a wide range of areas including sophisticated estate planning, estate and trust litigation, guardianship proceedings, complex commercial litigation and real estate transactions.

Among the many litigated cases of distinction that James has worked on is Penny D. Taylor v. Joseph Rosa, No. 76026-04 (Bronx Sup. 2007), which significantly changed the law of Paternity by Estoppel less than a year after the New York State Court of Appeals, holding In the matter of Shondel J. v. Mark D., 7 N.Y.3d 320, 853 N.E.2d 610, 820 N.Y.S.2d 199, 2006 N.Y. Slip Op. 05238, that ruled in favor of Paternity by Estoppel.

Mr. Hyer has been recognized as a leader within the legal profession currently serving in the New York State Bar Association House of Delegates and Vice President of the Westchester County Bar Association. His scholarly articles have appeared in publications including “New York Bar Association Journal”, “Westchester Family Magazine”, “Westchester Business Journal”, “Westchester Healthy Family Magazine”, “Westchester Lawyer Magazine”, “Westchester Rising”, the New York State Women’s Bar Association “Women’s Bar News”, and the “Westchester Women’s Bar Association Journal”.   Mr. Hyer has also written the Forward to a book by Dr. Lisa Rene Reynolds “Parenting Through Divorce – Helping Your Children Thrive During and After the Split”. Mr. Hyer has also appeared on media as a legal expert including CBS, News 12 Westchester and others.  A frequent lecturer on legal issues, Mr. Hyer served as an Adjunct Professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Mr. Hyer’s dedication to his clients and the profession has led him to be selected for the prestigious American Institute of Family Law Attorneys 10 Best In Client Satisfaction Honor; Legal Leaders published in the Wall Street Journal and New York State Bar Association Journal; Leading Attorney Under 40 in 2016 presented by Pace Law School, Westchester County Bar Association and Westchester Women’s Bar Association, and; Leadership Award in 2014 from the Westchester County Bar Association, Advancing Human Rights Award from Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc., in 2017, American Legion Meritorious Service Award, Rockland County Crime Prevention Bureau Distinguished Volunteer Cross.

Mr. Hyer has also been recognized for his dedication to community service by numerous organizations including the Rockland County Crime Prevention Bureau, Rockland County American Legion Ramapo Police Department, Rockland County Meals on Wheels, Boy Scouts of America, Moose International, Together Our Unity Can Heal, Inc., Rockland County Office of Fire & Emergency Services.
